People Powered Radio Sep 14-27, 2026

Kauaʻi Community Radio has been on the air consistently from before Hurricane Lowell passed us by (some of us were in studio and on the air for the event) until now. We have limited reach at only one transmitter, 90.9, which now reaches from Haʻena to parts of the East Side and Līhuʻe. We are operating on generator power on diesel gas. We have a donated starlink to reach our app and online listeners. Through it all we are still here. Thanks to our volunteers and partners and all the folks listening and calling in with recovery information.

Here is what I wrote before our fund drive before Lowell came our way:

Why People Powered Radio?

Community radio is about engagement and connections. It happens in real time and we experience it together. Itʻs relationship with content. We are bringing relationship and connection in a time when we are losing it to machines and algorithms. People Powered Radio is a response to the prevalence of artificial intelligence in our lives, our media, our flyers, our music, our content.

At KKCR we love our people, and weʻre doing radio the old-fashioned way: with real live people, in all our quirks and imperfections, curating music and information for listeners like you.

Our Goal is $83,000, which is the same amount that we lost from the federal government when the CPB shut down. KKCR relies on you for our daily operations to bring Hawaiian music, Kauaʻi-based shows, and so much music and creativity to the airwaves.
